Transformers Age Of Extinction Review

The film starts 65 million years ago when dinosaurs roamed the earth, a race of being known as The Creators (the film’s (possible) take on the Quintessons). launches seeds which cyberforms the land and wipes out most life on Earth (and did not create two different versions of Earth).

It’s been over five years since the battle of Chicago, the human-Autobot alliance has since ended and a new task force lead by Harold Attinger called Cemetery Wind was formed to hunt down all Transformers, together with an unaligned (cybertronian) bounty hunter named Lockdown, they ambush and slaughter Autobot medic Ratchet.

Meanwhile, our new human protagonist Cade Yeager and his friend Lucas buy a rusty old truck to strip it for parts, so they can pay for Cade’s daughter, Tessa to go to college. While getting ready to tear it apart, Cade realizes that the truck is a Transformer but not just any Transformer, the leader of the Autobots Optimus Prime stuck in stasis lock, using jumper cables he brings Optimus back to life. Optimus was feeling skeptical about Cade and the others, but trusts them when Cade shows that there all on the up and up. Cemetery Wind, tracks down Optimus, and storm his farm, the (field) leader of the team, threaten Cade, Tessa, and Lucas. Optimus comes out of the barn with guns ablazing, buying time for the Yeagers and Lucas to escape. They get into a chase, when they’re saved by Tessa’s secret boyfriend Shane but, Lucas dies in the crossfire.

After the fight scene, Optimus calls out for the remaining Autobots and scans a new truck mode, and they all meet up in the desert. Cade hacks a drone from the attack where the Autobots learn that Cemetery Wind works for a company called Kinetic Solutions Incorporated (KSI) and that Ratchet and another Autobot Leadfoot were killed, dissected, and melted down which devastated Optimus, to the point of wanting to kill the humans responsible. and decide to storm KSI.

The head of KSI, Joshua Joyce shows his assistant Darcy perfected Transformium, the unstable programmable metal that all Transformers are made of. He imprisoned Brains (who lost his left leg since the last movie), so he could decode dead Transformers brains and uses the data for KSI’s man-made Transformers, one of these MMTs is Galvatron, made using data from the remains of Megatron’s brain. Cade infiltrates KSI but gets caught by Cemetery Wind, while being interrogated by Attinger, Optimus and the Autobots attack the building and free Brains, just before they tried to destroy the building, Joyce tells Prime that humanity doesn’t need the Autobots anymore now that they can build they’re own Transformers. Disgusted, the Autobots leave, but not before Attinger orders Joyce to activate Galvatron and another MMT Stinger to pursue the Autobots. Galvatron and Optimus duke it out, until Lockdown comes in, shoots and captures Optimus and Tessa (who was caught in fight).

Optimus fights Lockdown on his ship and Lockdown locks Optimus in his trophy room with the Dinobot, Lockdown explains that the Creators want Optimus back, he gives Attinger a seed, giving Cade, Lucas and the Autobots time to board the ship, Cade, Shane, Crosshairs, and Bumblebee free Tessa, shortly after Hound and Drift save Optimus before Lockdown’s ship entered deep space. Brains reveals that Galvatron is a reincarnated version of Megatron and that he’s been manipulating KSI to build an army and use the seed to wipe out humanity and create more Decepticons. Cade tells Joyce about this who went to Hong Kong with Darcy to get a military extraction.

Later on, Galvatron activates himself and reprograms all Transformer drones to obey him. Optimus frees the Dinobots and with their help the Autobots destroy Galvatron’s army. Lockdown shows up and recaptures Optimus. The two get into a fight, Cade tries to help but is held at gunpoint by Attinger, optimus kills him but is left wide open for Lockdown, who impales him for his trouble. Cade and Bumblebee distract Lockdown while Tessa and Shane take the sword out of Optimus, who kills Lockdown. He sets the Dinobots free and assigns the Autobots to protect the Yeagers. Optimus then leaves Earth carrying  the seed sending a message to the Creators to leave Earth alone and that he’s coming for them…

This film was pretty weak, not as weak as Revenge Of The Fallen, but pretty weak. The ideas for it were good just not executed as well as I thought they’d be. The only idea that was pulled off a little was the concept of humans building their own Transformers. The Creators sound like they could pose a serious threat, if we could actually see them, we did see an organic-like hand, but that’s all we get to see of them. The one problem everyone has with the film I that it goes on too long, I felt dozing off a couple of times. Despite my mixed opinions on the character, I still would’ve liked to know what happened to Sam and the other human characters. The films effects were good (as always with these movies) especially with the Dinobots and the transformation sequences for the MMT’s. I along with all the fans were very excited to see Frank Welker in the films, he did a great job as Galvatron, guess they couldn’t get Leonard Nimoy to play him or, they were worried people who saw the third movie would get confused. It was great to see the Dinobots in live action form, and it was great seeing both Optimus fight and later ride Grimlock. And finally, Thank God for Mark Wahlberg! This guy is a huge step up from Shia LaBeouf, I wasn’t annoyed by him as the film kept going, and Kelsey Grammer played a much better government agent, this how John Turturro’s character should have been. All and all, the film was just weak, it had it’s moments here and there, but it just could have been done better. All we can do is hope that the fifth installment will be a step up from the films before it.
