All right we’re down to the final three shows in the Marvel Animated Universe. (In case you didn’t notice the correction)Now, I know yesterday I told you I was reviewing Spider-Man Unlimited, I typed that in by mistake, I thought Spider-Man Unlimited came out before Sliver Surfer. I apologize for that.
With that said… The origin.
Norrin Radd is from the utopian planet Zenn-La, in the Deneb star system of the Milky Way galaxy. Zenn-La’s ancient and significantly advanced civilization has lost the will to strive or explore, leaving the young scholar Norrin Radd restless and yearning for adventure. Facing the destruction of his world by planet-consuming Galactus, Radd bargains with the cosmic being. In return for the safety of Zenn-La and his lover, Shalla-Bal, Radd pledges to seek out planets for the world devourer to consume as his herald. Galactus imbues him with a portion of the Power Cosmic, transforming him into the Silver Surfer.
This is where I believe the Marvel Animated Universe began it’s downfall. Unlike the previous shows Silver Surfer (along with the next two shows we’ll look at) lasted only one season. The first three episodes (which retells the origin), added a few things like having Galactus move Zenn-La, removing the Fantastic Four from his origin, and putting Thanos in the mix.
The show did have a team-up, (but it didn’t serve as a pilot) the Surfer assisted the Thor-like alien Beta Ray Bill in protecting his planet. The next episode featured Galactus’ new herald Frankie Raye (i.e. Nova) hoping the Surfer will help her in helping a dying galactus. There are two episodes featuring Drax The Destroyer and Adam Warlock two members of the Guardians Of The Galaxy (you’ll learn more about them next summer).
Surfer did find a planet that he thought was Zenn-La, but just turned out to be Ego The Living Planet, a neutral ally to the Surfer. The season (and the series) ends with the Surfer racing to stop Galactus from reversing the flow of time and in turn destroying the universe.
There were plans for a second season which includes: the Surfer stopping Thanos from destroying the universe by recreating it (and learning the origins of Thanos and Lady Death (referred to as Lady Chaos for censoring standards)). The Surfer returning to Zenn-La and Shalla-Bal,but is cut short due to her sacrificing herself for the planet. Then it would have ended with a three-parter where the Surfer and Nova return to Earth and fights the (newly created) Fantastic Four.
Despite, being the first of three shows to end Marvel Animated Universe, it’s actually a very impressive show. Just like Spider-Man the show combines both CG and Traditional animation, paving away for new possibilities for different planets and locations for the show.
Well, 6 down 2 more to go. Next week we’re going to wrap up Marvel Month with Spider-Man Unlimited (really!) and the very first attempt at an Avengers adaptation.
