Hey everyone, I wanted to take some time away from the big surprise Dead Television project (despite the fact that I gave the most “subtle” hint about it) to talk about a new fan film based on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, MMPR. A dark, gritty, and realistic (as realistic as six people fighting aliens can be) take on the 20 year old franchise.
So here’s the story from the website and kickstarter page:
“The Power Rangers have vanished. Lord Zedd, their greatest enemy, has been defeated. The world is saved. Tommy Oliver, no longer the White Ranger, is in exile; running…hiding…waiting…for evil to find him again.
The world has moved on. Now, 20 years later, Lord Zedd has returned – stronger and nastier than before! Slowly regaining his powers and at the helm of a new army, he is looking for revenge against Tommy and the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
Haunted by his past and having given up on fighting for the world, Tommy is tracked down by Zedd and his minions. But with the help of a mysterious woman, they discover that Zedd is looking for more than revenge…much more.
Now, to stop the forces of evil, Tommy and this mysterious woman seek help in stopping Zedd: an underground street fighter looking to do battle with anyone and everyone, twin sisters as different as night and day, seeking to protect the earth, and a police officer who is no stranger to villains.
A new group of heroes have been chosen, but will they be able to team together to defeat Lord Zedd, all while dealing with an interfering militants and his soldiers?
Will they triumph, or will Zedd finally destroy his greatest threat once and for all?
Reformed, repowered, the POWER RANGERS are back.”
Now when first saw their trailer, I was a little skeptical about it at first (the fact that their IndieGoGo funding failed didn’t help much either), but when I found out that they manage to get Robert Axlerod (voice of Lord Zedd), David Fielding (voice of Zordon) and, Ron Wasserman (composer) on board and the support, respect, and admiration from former cast and crewmen from the actually series, I decided to give the fan film another chance. By that time they made a slighty improved version, once I understood the story and idea of this film I became a little more open minded about it. May 3 came around, and the MMPR team started their Kickstarter campaign hoping to reach they’re goal of $18,500 to make the first episode, they managed to reach their goal within 22 days (with help from me). After they decided to try and double their current Kickstarter budget, so they can make episode 2, by June 23 their stretch goal was almost doubled.
A few weeks before the end of the Kickstarter ended, the MMPR team uploaded a minisode featuring the (possible) minor villain Gen. Collins explaining the story of the film and something called PROJECT_RANGER, there was also a hilarious reference to the original series. Earlier last month, a second minisode was made involving a hacker, along with some decent viral marketing for the episode. Last week, they finally filmed the first episode (which concluded Monday), and, yesterday the first image of episode 1 was posted on their Facebook page. Episode 1 will most likely be uploaded on Youtube sometime next month.
